Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
An amazing book by an amazing man. How Douglass expresses the dehumanizing effects of slavery is superb. The hidden meaning in words such as "Mr. Freeland" and "breaking/taming" bring so much more depth and meaning to the story. The "soliloquy" of Douglass in Chapter 10 is absolutely profound. I highly recommend this book for everyone, especially those studying the pre-Civil War time period.
